Sunspel

Retail Design

Restoration retail drove both the strategy and the eventual retail design for the first of the new Sunspel stores.
Sunspel have been producing some of the finest cotton garments for over 100 years from a small factory in Long Eaton, England and had a rich history and an as yet untold quality story.

The retail concept aimed to do two things. To restore the heritage cotton story that lay behind the brand and at the same time show the product off in a store that was designed to be a stripped back canvas and not the main focus.

Some of Sunspel’s cotton innovations like the twist lock cotton used for over 100 years in the manufacture of the t-shirts were used in the store details to embed the manufacturing stories and all of the interior details were allowed to remain raw and unfinished. Floors were covered in reclaimed English oak parquet blocks and walls lined in calico. All of the furniture was either sourced from reclamation or re-conditioned but all with English origins.

The first store opened on Old Compton Street, London.
